Dusty Crew Racing Race Report With desert racing having a long break and lots of cancellations due to COVID-19, there were 46 Pro Turbo UTVs entered. Since we weren’t letting COVID stop us from racing, mother nature decided to step in and start a fire on race mile 17 of the course the day before. BITD did an amazing job rerouting the course around the fire and making it possible for us to race; we ended up starting at the finish line and was forced to finish at pit 6, shortening the course by about 90 miles, as the fire continued to grow. Leading up to the race we had put in lots of time researching, updating our set-up, and testing.
The biggest change to our UTV was the addition of Lone Star Racing’s suspension 1 37TH PRO TURBO UTV OUT OF 46 CLASS ENTRIES BEST IN THE DESERT SILVER STATE “300” 18th PRO TURBO UTV CURRENT CLASS POINT STANDINGS JUNE 27, 2020 ALAMO, NEVADA components, which took our car from 64 inches wide to 72 inches wide. Let us tell you, that extra 8 inches made the car handle the whoops and anything else the desert threw at us with ease. On race day, temperatures reached up to 108 degrees and we unfortunately did not start until just after 1 PM. For the first time since racing the BITD series , we got a mid-pack starting position. We finally got our chance to start and we felt amazing, until we had an issue with our intercooler boost tube that we ended up reinstalling twice throughout the race. It was a minor issue that unfortunately cost us a large amount of time. After fixing it twice we were deep in the pack and started to pass all of the cars we had already passed after reinstalling the tube the first time. The dust and silt were beyond thick, so we played it safe knowing we had lost too much time and made sure we did not make any costly mistakes.
After our heartbreaking ending to this race in 2019, we were all about getting a finish this year. With each passing mile, we were making up lots of time and picking off physical positions. Unfortunately, bad luck struck us again, this time putting the car into limp mode for the last 65 miles of the race. Completing 65 miles at 20-30 mile per hour never felt so long or slow. Even though we did not finish how we wanted to, we are excited with how flawless our Dusty Crew Can-Am X3 ran, minus the minor mechanical issues that we have already solved. Our top speed was 103 miles per hour and our Elka Stage 5 Shocks let us tackle absolutely anything that the course threw our way. Thank you for KWI Clutching for testing with us the day before the race and helping improve the horsepower and handling of our UTV. We greatly appreciate all of the advice and support that our sponsors have given us throughout the season and we are ready for Vegas to Reno in August.
