Round six of the 2010 Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was held at Glen Helen Raceway. We were once again blessed with great weather with the temperatures topping out in the low 90’s. The track layout was exactly the same as round 5 last month, quite a bit more technical than usual as we were still riding most of the USGP layout. My race day was slightly more busy this weekend as I rode both the Production and Open Pro classes. We also had the addition of the crew from Dirt Trax TV in and around our pit. They are a great group of guys and I’m excited to be on a week long “California Adventure” with them as they film for an upcoming episode.
Production Moto 1: My #94 YFZ 450R pulled hard down the long start straight and got me to the Talladega first turn just ahead of Beau Baron for the holeshot. John Shafe, Jason Dunkleberger and Justin Noss immediately started a moto long battle for third. Out front with clear sailing I was able to put in clean, fast laps and open up a gap over Baron. Noss made his way past both Dunk and Shafe to take the third spot. At the finish I took the win followed by Baron, Noss, Shafe and Dunk.
Production Moto 2: Baron pulled the holeshot with Reed Petchnick second and Noss third. I was fourth and felt I needed to work quick to not let Baron get too far away. I made the pass on Noss down the first hill and as I cut into the inside line Petchnick was stopped, high centered in the ruts. With no time to stop I rammed the back of Petchnick, this did two things: I knocked him forward getting him going again and I popped myself out of the ruts. With my new found inside line I powered by Petchnick up Mount St. Helens putting me into second by halfway through the first lap. Over the next couple laps I was able to catch Baron and apply pressure but the pass wasn’t going to be easy. Just past halfway through the moto Baron made a small mistake coming off the top of the first downhill, I saw my opportunity and went faster than I had all day down the inside and pulled off the pass I needed for the win. When the checkers flew, I took the win with a five second gap over Baron with Noss, Jason Fife and Dunk rounding out the top five.
Round six of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was a great one. We got back on top claiming the win in the all important Production Pro class and we raced the Open Pro for the first time all year and won it with 1-1 moto scores as well. The next race is another Saturday night race at Speedworld near Phoenix. I’ve always like the Speedworld course so I’m looking forward to having another great weekend.
